Where to Stay Near Kāʻanapali

Kāʻanapali is the beach most people picture when they picture West Maui — three miles of sand, a line of resorts, a beachfront boardwalk, and Whalers Village in the middle of it. It is genuinely excellent, and it is priced accordingly.

What many first-time visitors do not realise is that "near Kāʻanapali" is a real and useful category. The condo communities immediately north — Honokōwai, Kahana, Napili — sit on the same coastline, a short drive from the same beach, at very different nightly rates. This page lays out that trade honestly, including the parts that count against it.

The three ways to be near Kāʻanapali

1. On the strip

Staying at a Kāʻanapali resort means walking out of your room onto one of the best beaches in Hawaii. Pools, spas, on-site restaurants, beach service, activity desks, and no car required for most of the day. Whalers Village and the boardwalk are right there.

You pay for it — in the nightly rate, and typically in a resort fee and parking charge on top. If your idea of a holiday is not leaving the property, this is the correct choice and the value is real.

2. Just north — Honokōwai, Kahana, Napili

A short drive up Lower Honoapiʻilani Road puts you in low-rise condo territory. Smaller buildings, no lobbies, no resort fees, kitchens as standard, and a nightly rate that is generally far below the strip. Many of these buildings sit very close to the water — in some cases closer than newer resort construction, because they predate modern shoreline setback rules.

You are still minutes from Kāʻanapali Beach and its restaurants. You are also closer to Napili Bay and Kapalua going north.

3. Lahaina town and south

South of Kāʻanapali the character changes again. Following the 2023 wildfire, Lahaina town remains in a long recovery, and visitor services there have changed substantially. Check current conditions carefully and travel with respect for a community still rebuilding.

What you actually give up by staying north

We would rather be straight about this than sell you something.

• You will drive. Every trip to Kāʻanapali Beach, Whalers Village or a resort restaurant is a drive plus a parking decision. Public beach parking along the strip fills early — arriving mid-morning in high season often means circling.
• No resort amenities. No spa, no beach service, no towel hut, no activity desk. Condo pools are modest by comparison.
• No walkable dining scene. There is food near you, but not a strip of restaurants. Most dinners involve driving.
• Older buildings. Finishes vary widely, air conditioning is not universal, and many complexes are walk-ups without lifts. Check the specific unit and floor.

What you keep

• The same coastline and the same sunsets, over Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi.
• The same access to Kāʻanapali. Hawaii beaches are public, with designated access points and parking along the strip. Arrive early.
• A kitchen, which quietly changes the economics of a week-long trip more than most people account for. Breakfast and a few dinners in is a meaningful sum on Maui.
• Quiet. Mornings on this stretch are genuinely still.
• A shorter run north to Napili Bay, Kapalua and the snorkelling up that way.

Who should choose which

Book the resort if this is a short trip, a honeymoon or a special occasion; if you want to be looked after; if you would rather not drive; or if resort amenities are the point of the holiday.

Book north if you are staying a week or more; if you plan to be out most days exploring; if you are travelling with a family and want a kitchen and a walkable local beach; if you have been to Maui before; or if you would rather put the difference into a boat trip and dinners out.

Where we are

We own one condo on this stretch — The Pikake A3 in Honokōwai, immediately north of Kāʻanapali. It is a ground-floor, one-bedroom oceanfront unit about twenty feet from the shoreline, and it sleeps three. Honokōwai Beach Park is a walk away; snorkel rental and coffee are across the street.
