The Pikake Condo Guide
The Pikake is a small oceanfront condo complex at 3701 Lower Honoapiʻilani Road in Honokōwai, on the west coast of Maui. It is the kind of property people find by accident, remember, and then try to find again — which is largely why this page exists.
We own and manage one unit here, A3. This guide covers the complex and the location generally, then that unit specifically.
The complex
The Pikake is small and low-rise, built in the era when buildings on this coast still went right up to the shoreline. That single fact explains most of its appeal. Newer construction on Maui sits further back from the water by rule; The Pikake does not, because it predates those rules.
There is no lobby, no front desk, no resort infrastructure. What there is: a quiet building, a short stretch of shoreline, and the Pacific directly in front of you. If you want a spa and a swim-up bar, the Kāʻanapali resorts are a short drive south and do that properly. If you want to be on the water in a genuinely quiet place, this is the trade.
The location
Honokōwai sits between Kāʻanapali to the south and Napili and Kapalua to the north. Kahului Airport is roughly 45 minutes away by car, though allow more in traffic.
On foot from the property:
- Honokōwai Beach Park — protected, shallow and calm on most days; grass, shade and picnic tables. Good for children and beginner snorkellers.
- Bad Ass Coffee — across the street.
- Boss Frog's — snorkel and dive gear rental, also across the street. Renting for the week beats buying.
- A taco truck, across the road.
- Lahuiokalani Kaʻanapali Congregational Church — visitors welcome at Sunday morning services; confirm times locally.
- ABC Store — past the beach park.
- Papi Ohana — locally famous cinnamon rolls. The line starts early and they sell out; bring a chair.
- At Wit's End — souvenirs.
A short drive gets you to Kāʻanapali Beach and Whalers Village, Napili Bay, and Kapalua. A car is strongly recommended.

Ground floor is the underrated part. Many West Maui complexes are walk-ups without lifts, which means stairs with luggage on arrival, stairs with groceries mid-week, and stairs with wet beach gear every afternoon. A3 has none of that. For guests with mobility considerations, travelling with small children, or simply carrying a cooler, it changes the daily texture of a stay.
Twenty feet from the water is the memorable part. You hear the ocean at night. In winter, watching for whales from the lanai is an ordinary morning activity rather than an excursion.
What it is not
We would rather set expectations correctly than collect a disappointed review.
It is one bedroom and it sleeps three — this is not a family-of-five condo. It is an older building, not a new-build with contemporary finishes. There are no resort amenities. And there is no walkable dinner scene; most evenings out involve a drive.
If those are dealbreakers, the Kāʻanapali resorts or a larger Kahana or Napili unit will serve you better, and we would rather tell you now.
